![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But that was definitely a relationship worth exploring, a friendship worth growing. That should’ve been the main plot point, but it kind of just stymied out. What I would’ve enjoyed more is the blossoming friendship, almost mentorship, between Xochi and Pallas. And what’s worse is that the characters in the book are talking about the age difference and the problems there, but it doesn’t change any outcomes or the situation. There’s a difference between a traumatic experience between an adult and teen/child, and a blatant relationship or sexual encounter. Michelle Ruiz Keils YA fantasy debut about love, found family, and healing is an ode to post-punk San Francisco through the eyes of a Mexican-American. Why do we need a romantic relationship to kindle between a 28-year old and a 17-year old? Why do we need sexual scenes between twenty-somethings and a teenager? We don’t. She is the author of the critically acclaimed young adult novels All of Us With Wings and Summer In The City of Roses. And there were components of it that could’ve been really lovely, but the book includes an excessive amount of adult/teenager relationships that were key part of the books but could’ve been entirely omitted without changing the purpose of the story. An ode to post-punk San Francisco through the eyes of a Mexican. Some of my first thoughts while reading All Of Us With Wings included: “why the hell are there so many characters,” “I am so confused,” and “what in the actual hell am I reading?” All of us with wings (2019)by Keil, Michelle Ruiz. ![]() ![]() ![]() Merit is a blast to read about she goes from your everyday girl to having all these crazy vamp powers she is trying to control. ![]() This novel was just a lot of fun pure and simple. Around the same time Merit finds out she is a vamp her roommate finds out she may be a powerful sorceress…and now things are getting even crazier. Now instead of working on her thesis she is a vampire trying to navigate the complex politics between vamp houses…which are especially touchy now that vamps have come out of hiding and humans are being mysteriously found dead. Merit has been saved by Ethan Sullivan the head of Cadogan House. That is the right until a vampire rips her throat out and another vamp saves her life….kind of. Merit is a grad student working on a PhD in romantic literature. ![]() I ended up listening to this on audiobook and the audiobook is extremely well done. I’ve been meaning to read this series for quite some time as I’ve had it recommended to me a number of times. This is the first book in the Chicagoland Vampire series by Neill. Stand Alone or Series: 1st in the Chicagoland Vampires series ![]() ![]() ![]() The plot is, really, A:AA’s only stumbling block. Though technically a solo series, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin is a group effort, and with all the loners out there headlining comic books, that’s a good thing. Her seriousness clashes well against Star Lord and Rocket’s snarkiness and her relationship with Sera (a fantastic transgender character, by the way) brings out what little tenderness she has. It’s her contrast to other characters that keeps her from stagnating. To be very clear, Angela is not a dull or one-note character, but she’s stoic, and that can only go so far on its own. This isn’t a criticism against Angela, so much as a tip of the hat to writers, Kieron Gillen and Marguerite Bennett, for understanding what their heroine needs to flourish. ![]() Romulo Fajardo’s color work (an oft underappreciated job, I suspect), is truly spectacular, blending tones together, particularly in the flashbacks, to create a sense of texture and depth reminiscent of an Amy Brown painting (and I mean that in a good way).Īngela herself continues to be a compelling character, though the further into A:AA I go, the more apparent it becomes that she needs an ensemble cast to carry the series. ![]() ![]() Their character designs strike the perfect balance between cartoon and realism and they use a variety of angles and panel arrangements to great effect without coming off as self-indulgent. Phil Jimenez and Stephanie Hans’ illustrations are gorgeous. ![]() ![]() She says they’ll only destroy each other. But when one foolish mistake drives her out of Reed’s arms and brings chaos to the Royal household, Reed’s entire world begins to fall apart around him.Įlla doesn’t want him anymore. What started off as burning resentment and the need to make his father’s new ward suffer turned into something else entirely-keep Ella close. The girls at his elite prep school line up to date him, the guys want to be him, but Reed never gave a damn about anyone but his family until Ella Harper walked into his life. Reed Royal has it all-looks, status, money. ![]() Broken Prince(The Royals, Book 2) by Erin Wattįrom wharf fights and school brawls to crumbling lives inside glittery mansions, one guy tries to save himself. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This decision will save his life, but it will pull him into the very center of what we know today as the Killing Fields. Arn's never played a note in his life, but he volunteers. One day, the soldiers ask if any of the kids can play an instrument. But after the soldiers march the entire population into the countryside, his life is changed forever.Īrn is separated from his family and assigned to a labor camp: working in the rice paddies under a blazing sun, he sees the other children dying before his eyes. When soldiers arrive in his hometown, Arn is just a normal little boy. It includes an author's note and acknowledgments from Arn Chorn-Pond himself. This National Book Award nominee from two-time finalist Patricia McCormick is the unforgettable story of Arn Chorn-Pond, who defied the odds to survive the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979 and the labor camps of the Khmer Rouge.īased on the true story of Cambodian advocate Arn Chorn-Pond, and authentically told from his point of view as a young boy, this is an achingly raw and powerful historical novel about a child of war who becomes a man of peace. ![]() ![]() ![]() Will they rise to the challenge? Will they be forced to grow? Will the truth set them free? What will the future hold? Could they have lived different lives? What would those different lives look like? How do you cope with the fallout of secrets? How indeed. Having to deal with them all at once is even harder. The shock of death, learning harsh realities and uncovering truths are difficult things. Both are lacking in life skills, and both learn that their mother's friends and even those living in the village, knew more about their mother than they both did. ![]() It is depressing and I felt for Julius and Jeanie for various reasons. Initially, I was not sure that I liked this book. ![]() After Dot's death in the beginning of the book (we are told this in the synopsis), they must find ways to survive. Julius works odd jobs for income, and both believe they know their mother but find that she had secrets. Jeanie has a garden she tends and sells the vegetables to a local restaurant. They live in a cottage in a rural setting, isolated, and in poverty. This is not a happy-go-lucky book but one that tells the story of fifty-one-year-old twins, Julius and Jeanie who lived with their mother, Dot until her sudden death one morning. There is a sense of melancholy throughout the book. The book, as other reviewers have mentioned, is unsettling. Unsettled Ground is such an apt title for this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() Today, Mutesi is a student at Northwest University, a Christian college near Seattle that offered her a full scholarship. Katwe is a place of disease, unimaginable poverty, starvation and constant struggle. ![]() It’s about a 10-year-old girl who couldn’t read or write but picked up chess to satisfy her hunger, then fell in love with a sport that changed her life. The ensuing story, first an ESPN The Magazine article, became a book and then a movie in theaters starring Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o and “Selma’s” David Oyelowo. By 2010, four years later, she had become an international chess champion. Mutesi - who ate maybe once a day - stayed at her first meeting because she was offered a bowl of porridge. Robert Katende, also from Kamapla, was holding chess club meetings to help local youth.
